Best Car and Truck Books for Toddlers & Preschoolers
WRITTEN BY ABI CUSHMAN
It’s a well-known fact that little kids love books about cars, trucks and other things that move. My own kids are no exception. In fact, experiencing the unfiltered, sheer joy with my kids as we zoomed through books about bikes and trikes, banana cars and blue trucks inspired me to create my own car and truck book, ANIMALS GO VROOM!.
So here’s our tried and tested list of the best car and truck books for toddlers and preschoolers:
Animals Go Vroom! by Abi Cushman
In this giggle-inducing guessing game picture book, die-cut holes offer a peek at the next page, and kids are challenged to guess who or what is making each sound. Is it the goose honking or is it the taxi he’s driving making the sound? Kids will love shouting out their answers and seeing what happens with the snake family with the new car, the sea lion artist, and the taxi-riding otter.
Who Is Driving? by Leo Timmers
This is another fun guessing game book, in which kids see a line of different animals wearing different outfits and have to figure out which one is the driver of that vehicle. Featuring fun car and truck sounds, this is a great interactive read for toddlers.
Busy Builders, Busy Week! by Jean Reidy and Leo Timmers
This is a rollicking, rhyming book chock full of animals, construction trucks AND days of the week. It is such a fun read aloud, and kids will enjoy following along as the builders add more and more to their project.
Trucks by Byron Barton
This classic still captivates young audiences. Toddlers will love looking at the bold illustrations of delivery trucks, moving trucks, ice cream trucks, and more. And I will always wonder why the bread from the delivery truck is blue.
Vehicles Hide and Sneak by Bastien Contraire
In this limited color palette book, kids examine the pictures and try to find which picture is not quite like the other. Car, car, car, LADYBUG! Kids will find it hilarious when they spot which picture is the odd one out.
Cars and Trucks and Things that Go by Richard Scarry
Okay we really couldn’t have this list of car and truck books without this classic. Just like me when I was a kid, my kids absolutely love poring over the illustrations and finding their favorite funny car or truck. (I’m partial to the doughnut car.) And of course, after so many rereadings, they’ve memorized where Goldbug is in each scene, but it’s still a game to see who can point to him the fastest.
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry
Great rhymes make this book a fun one to keep rereading. Kids will love the different animals and animal sounds too. Here’s a video of my son and me reading our favorite part:
