World Wombat Day is held every year on October 22. And wombats definitely deserve their own day of celebration because they are truly special animals. Check out this slideshow of four weird facts about wombats, adapted from my book, WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD:
Wombats in the Wild
It’s important to spread awareness about wombats because they face many threats in the wild, such as habitat loss, drought, and mange (a skin disease caused by mites). In fact, one species of wombat, the northern hairy-nosed wombat, is critically endangered with only about 300 individuals left in the wild today.
You can help spread awareness about wombats by studying wombats, having a wombat-themed storytime at your school, or just sharing all the fun facts you know about wombats with your friends.
